Great external hard drive. I got 4 of these. I got them because they are small and I can take them anywhere with me and they don’t take up a lot of space. They also work with everything. I have a mac And windows computers along with pads android and my phone. They load up extremely fast. I love them. If I could I would buy more. So forget the older hard drives and try these up will love them ..

Small and performant. I bought this as supplemental storage for my low-capacity Macbook. I was worried that it might be too inconvenient to use, but I’ve been very impressed.Performance: Excellent. It gets the advertised speeds and I don’t notice any slowdown when using it compared to my internal SSD.Form factor: WAY smaller and lighter than I expected, in a good way. Its profile is scarcely larger than a credit card, and it’s slightly thinner than a Bic pen. It’s just big and sturdy enough that you won’t easily lose it, but small and discrete enough to slip into a bag or sleeve easily.Encryption: I think that any mobile hardware with personal data on it should be encrypted. I was planning to encrypt the drive using third-party tools, but realized after buying that it has its own encryption hardware built in. The official app for decrypting the drive is super easy to use, and since it’s all handled on the SSD itself, there’s no extra overhead and minimal performance impact. If you’re looking for an SSD that will see moderate daily use, this is easily the one to get.

I have an iMac 2020 27″ Retina display with an internal 512 GB SSD and no way to add additional internal storage (I picked up the iMac 2020 at a too-good-to-be-true price from a friend of a friend for this reason). I’ve been using a SAMSUNG T7 2TB SSD for 16 months on my iMac as permanent external storage for home directories instead. Fortunately the iMac 2020 has a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s) port and it works as desired with the SAMSUNG’s USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. In testing I measured 850-860 MB/s (Write) and 900+ MB/s (Read) on the T7 configured as an unencrypted APFS volume on my iMac 2020; that’s reasonably close to the maximum vendor-claimed 1,000 MB/s speeds. Overall system performance configured this way has been great with two caveats: 1) The iMac must be configured to mount home directory volume(s) on the external SSD at boot time or else intermittent problems occur, and 2) iCloud Keychain for home directories on external volumes stopped working with the Monterey 12.6.4 update the end of March 2023 but was restored to proper functioning in the Monterey 12.6.5 update that came out on April 10th. I *think* Apple more or less officially supports home directories on alternative volumes, but not all of the support staff are familiar with this configuration.

(Before buying the SAMSUNG T7 I had attempted to build a DIY Fusion Drive using the internal SSD and an external USB rotating rust drive to replicate the pleasurable combination of SSD and rotating rust I had in my older 2014 iMac. Although this seemed possible (and appeared to build correctly), each attempt I made failed in unexpected ways when put into use. Since my family has way too much data to put us all on the 512 GB internal SSD, and I was unwilling to go back to rotating rust performance, I opted to go for an external SSD for user home directories. I have been very happy with the resulting performance.)

I use this as an external drive using a USB 3.0 connection on a Win 10 box. I am using it to store and run Steam downloaded PC games and it works great for that and has been flawless with zero issues. My PC has a i7-4790S CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, and a Samsung 870 EVO SATA III 1TB SSD. The 870 EVO has a data transfer rate of about 500 MB/s read/write while the Samsung T7 has a data transfer rate of 400 MB/s on my system, so they work very well together. It does seem to get a little warm when transferring a lot of data while gaming so I just set it in one of these metal mesh business card holders to give it some ventilation which seems to be working well to keep it a bit cooler.

I now own several generations (and 3 colors!) of Samsung T SSDs- T3, T5, T7 plus the Shield version.

They’ve been my long-time go-to, especially as prices come down and file sizes go up.
Thin-sliced from my 1st review: It’s an easy-to-use and very secure little device, fast and simple to use across devices and even systems, as plugging in it opens a choice of OS and a window to log-in. The password is always what you assign at set-up, and it’s hard-wired into the device, so it stays secure, requiring password every time it’s first connected.

Tech specs you can read. It’s fast, blazing when connected to other SSD’s. Gets a little toasty with huge transfers (like my 1GB initial transfer from another drive). It comes with two types of USB cables, which work well, and secure it well even if pulled around a bit on its short length. I’d note that the T7 Shield is an exception, consistently coming (in my experience) with a poorly designed connector/receptacle, nearly impossible to keep a solid connection unless you don’t breathe or vibrate things when you type. That bad.

I digress. This – the basic T7 (newer software interface but basically same as T5 – is one of those things that “just works”. Like the others, on the Mac it may hava some small quirks – like saying it’s disconnected when you first connect, or similar, but it works fine, 100% of the time for me thus far, all of them (knock on wood). Unless you really truly like the idea of the ridged design and heat-dissipation of the Shield, I’d advise against it (I called Samsung, they said they’d send a new cord, and didn’t, and claim not to know about the port/plug issue). That off my chest, I love and swear by the T5s and T7s, and caveat emptor on the Shields.

On M1 Pro/Mac Studio here, The T7 stored out 15,000 photos in under 2 minutes. This is a very small portion of the disc
USB-C. Also have the Samsung T7. The adapters from USB-A to USB-C allows both to connect to the Mac at same time. Speed difference is about double. The studio has 1TB also so there is minimal swapping. Main memory is 32GB. Bigger may be better if you need that for videos, Time Machine, etc. APFS is current format but not backward compatible. I used MAC OSX Extended, Journaled. Leave off “case sensitive” unless you encrypt discs. On Windows FAT32 would work and also is readable on MAC

SSD drives are way faster than the old spinning platters in disk drives. Downloading large photography files (from a 42 MP Nikon Z7ii) to this drive is just blazing fast. And it’s really quick and responsive when attached to my Macbook. The small size makes it really easy to bring along when traveling or going to do a presentation somewhere. While there have been some quality control issues with the Samsung 4 Tb SSD drive, I’ve heard nothing but praise for the 1 Tb version. Mine has performed perfectly and I’m very pleased with it. I’m imagining that this would be a great product for people doing video because it’s so fast.
