Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II Lens Black
Small Size, Huge Versatility
A refined take on the fast standard zoom, the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is not only smaller and lighter than the previous generation, it also features a variety of optical, focusing, and handling upgrades, catering to both photo and video applications, that make this the most well-rounded G Master zoom to date.
G Master Image Quality
Designed to rival the primes, this zoom’s optics have been revamped to provide even greater resolution, clarity, and bokeh quality.
Bright f/2.8 constant aperture allows users to capture images in dim lighting conditions and with a shallow depth of field.
Two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED elements effectively suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color fidelity.
Five aspherical elements, including two extreme aspherical elements (XA), minimize spherical aberrations, distortion, and also reduce ‘onion ring’ bokeh.
Nano AR Coating II controls flare and ghosting with support from a new optical design that reduces internal reflections.
An 11-blade aperture diaphragm helps create smooth, circular bokeh at all aperture settings.
Faster AF and Floating Focus Mechanism
Faster focusing performance, improved close-up shooting, and enhanced control are all benefits of the redesigned focusing system.
Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors contribute to greatly improved focusing performance, compared to the DDSSM system of the predecessor, including faster, quieter, and more precise AF that’s ideal for both photo and stills.
Faster AF means improved focusing when working with fast-moving subjects; support is available for shooting at up to 30 fps, full AF is maintained even when shooting stopped down, and focus tracking is possible even when changing the zoom position.
Floating focusing mechanism helps maintain image quality throughout the focusing range, which is especially important considering the impressive close-up performance of this lens: minimum focusing distance of 8.3″ at the 24mm position or 11.8″ at the 70mm position and a maximum magnification of 0.32x at the 70mm position.
Internal focusing design promotes snappier, more responsive focusing performance and also maintains the overall lens length during operation.
Improved Control and Video Capabilities
Just as camera design has grown to appeal to both photo and video shooters, this lens has also been updated with a series and attributes that specifically appeal to video shooters’ needs.
Focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming have all been minimized to prevent unwanted movements and angle of view variations for greater compositional accuracy during recording.
Supports the Breathing Compensation function in select cine-line and Alpha cameras.
The XD Linear Motors are also especially quiet to better enable the use of AF during video recording.
Linear Response MF provides natural, intuitive manual focus control.
Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for silent operation and the zoom smoothness can be adjusted depending on the desired torque.
Compact, Lightweight, and Robust Design
Among the smallest and lightest f/2.8 standard zooms available, this lens doesn’t lose sight of its professional attributes and also remains a weather-sealed, durable lens for use in trying working conditions.
Approximately 22% lighter and 18% smaller than its predecessor, this zoom is a highly portable and versatile option for a huge variety of shooting applications.
Now fit with a manual aperture ring, tactile exposure control is possible. This ring can be de-clicked for smooth and silent iris pulls or it can be locked in the ‘A’ position for camera-based aperture switching.
Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control.
Zoom smoothness switch for changing between Smooth and Tight zoom ring torque.

With significantly evolved AF performance, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM OSS II can deliver the full potential of today’s advanced still and movie cameras. Zoom system: Manual. The angle of View (35mm): 84°-34°. The angle of View (APS-C): 61°-23°.
- Excellent contrast at high spatial frequencies means superb resolution even at F2.8. Two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two ED (Extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements, and a floating focus mechanism control aberration, realize sharp, clear images at all zoom and aperture settings.
- This lens is the smallest and lightest F2.8 24-70mm zoom in its class 2. It weighs just 24.6 oz (695 g), over 20% less than the previous model. Image quality and low light / speed capability superior. Great focal range from wide to short telephoto. I use mainly for landscape and travel. Great usability (buttons, placement, how it works with camera software). But, still heavy enough to be a burden to carry around everywhere if you are a minimalist. But, it’ll have to do if you want that range with low light and speed. The hood drives me nuts. Difficult to put on, always a hassle. Interior is like felt and collects all sorts of dust and pet hairs. Annoyed!
My alternative considerations, as someone who has back problems and doesn’t like to carry around a lot if stuff or bulky/heavy stuff include:
Replacing with Sony GM 16-35 2.8 when they make version 2, or my Tamron 17-28 2.8. My telephoto needs are already fullfilled with light weight hassle free Tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3, and I wouldn’t have to carry my Voigtlander 15mm. For landscape/travel/wildlife, I rarely use 35-65mm focal range (maybe 10-20% of time, and I feel like I could make those pics work if I didn’t have that focal range). However, being able to go from wide to short telephoto without changing lenses is valuable.
Replacing with Tamron 28-200 2.8-5.6, and I could leave my Tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3 home. Lose some speed and quality for convenience. Seems liberating. But in practice will cause difficulty in the longer end capturing dawn/dusk (low light), getting sharp photos without tripod, birds/wildlife frozen in action (high shutter that low aperture enables), etc.
Tamron 35-150 2-2.8 very interesting, but too heavy (~67% heavier).
Tamron 28-75 2.8 I hear is comparable. Lighter and much cheaper. I would need to test. I might miss the 24mm and possibly snappy autofocus Sony-Sony has.
Sigma 24-70 2.8. Heavier, albeit cheaper. Too heavy for me.
Good luck!

I have been a prime shooter for over 5 years doing video and photo. I love my primes but I hate always trying to guess which lens to put on the camera in uncontrolled situations like weddings and events. Plus having one focal length and in the middle of shooting whishing I could change the focal length but its not always convenient to do so without missing some important moments. This zoom gives me pretty much the exact same sharpness as my primes. I filmed my first wedding with it and never changed lenses the entire day. I love this lens. Its very pricey but this is what I do for a living so it will pay itself off.

The lens is great in many ways. It takes extremely sharp pictures from far away and the continuous focus sensor is extremely efficient. My lens came defective but will get another one as soon as I get my refund back. This lens is a great addition to your camera bag. Shipping time was very fast.
